Considering the fact that Cuba boasts almost 300 heavenly natural beaches, it is a challenging task to pick the most beautiful ones, however the ones we recommend here are unspoilt by mass tourism for sure:
Cayo Santa Maria
This small island on the north east coast, whose pristine beaches have been protected by UNESCO, can offer you a lot more than just swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. If you are a wildlife lover, you will have a lot of fun spotting flamingos, endemic lizards, molluscs and the island’s national bird – the Tocororo. Apart from animals, the island is home to many tropical plant species. These white sandy beaches are protected from wind and powerful waves from the Atlantic by the coral barrier, which makes this tranquil piece of paradise ideal for families with smaller children.
The most popular beach holiday resort in Cuba, Varadero, boasts 20 kilometres of beach, 28 diving spots, crystal clear blue waters and a vast array of marine life. The children-friendly shallow and transparent waters are also a treat for divers and photographers keen on exploring tropical fish, crabs, molluscs and colourful corals. If you are not a diver, do not worry, at least dolphins are often visible from the shore.
This stunning island is a part of one of the world’s most beautiful coral reefs (the second most important one after Australia’s). It offers you 27 km of snowy white sands, clean and transparent sea with a wide variety of aquatic fauna. Calm lagoons fringed by the lush greenery of mangroves and coconut palm trees are the home to many kinds of tropical fish, pink flamingos and pelicans.
Another Cuban hotspot for divers, which offers a great opportunity for spotting tropical sea life and diving into the underwater caves at Gibara. Though it is one of the smallest beaches in Cuba, its unspoilt beauty and amazing coral beds attract many nature lovers.
Cayo Largo del Sur (Playa Paraíso, Playa Sirena)
Ideal for a getaway trip, Cayo Largo is a secluded piece of heaven, unspoilt by mass tourism, since it is not easily accessible. The only ways to reach it are either by plane or by boat from Havana, but a 6-hour trip is well worth the effort, as such tranquility is really difficult to find elsewhere. Just like many other Cuban beaches, it offers gorgeous coral reefs, wonderful natural beaches and shallow turquoise waters. A great option for nudists or the ones who have forgotten their swimwear at home.
Playa Pilar, Cayo Guillermo
Another little gem in the Jardines del Rey (Gardens of the King) archipelago located off the north coast of Cuba, which offers idyllic beaches with serene environment.
